EXPLORING KALKAN
As Kalkan Suite Hotel, we invite you to more than just a
stay; we invite you to witness a landscape where Mediterranean history is
written in stone and nature performs its most generous displays. Located at the
heart of the ancient Lycian Civilization, this region is a unique meeting point
of millenia-old heritage, living nomadic traditions, and a world-renowned
biodiversity.
Ancient Guardians of the Sea: Caretta Caretta and the Mediterranean Monk
Seal Our region is a specially protected area, hosting some of the most
delicate and rare marine species in the Mediterranean.
The
Sanctuary of Caretta Carettas: Patara Beach is one of the most significant
nesting grounds in the world for Loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta Caretta).
Their moonlit journey from the sand to the sea has been a miraculous cycle of
life on these shores for millions of years.

Mysterious
Inhabitants of the Blue Caves: The Mediterranean Monk Seal (Monachus monachus), one of
the 10 most endangered species in the world, still finds refuge in the
untouched coastal caves of Kalkan and Kaş. The presence of these rare seals is
the ultimate proof of the crystalline clarity of our waters and the pristine
state of our ecosystem.

Nature’s Rare Treasures: Our Endemic Wealth
Our region serves as a living natural museum, housing
species found nowhere else on Earth.
Sea Daffodils: The White Pearls of Patara: Emerging
gracefully from the vast dunes of Patara even in the most scorching heat, the Sea Daffodil (Pancratium
maritimum) is one of the most enchanting sights of our region. Known for
their exquisite fragrance that fills the night air, these protected flowers are
a symbol of elegance and resilience against the harsh elements of nature.

The Lycian Orchid & Endemic Flora: In the spring, the
hills of Kalkan and Kaş bloom with the Lycian Orchid (Ophrys lycia)—a botanical
jewel that exists only within this narrow coastal strip.

Ancient Guardians of the Sea: The vast dunes of Patara Beach
have been the nesting grounds for the endangered Caretta Caretta (Loggerhead
sea turtles) for millions of years. Furthermore, spotting the rare
Mediterranean Monk Seal in our crystal-clear coves is a testament to the
ecological purity of our waters.
A Living Culture: The Yoruk Heritage
Kalkan and its surroundings are special places where the
"Yoruk" (nomadic) culture seamlessly blends into modern life.
Barak Rugs & Women’s Cooperatives: One of our most
precious cultural symbols, the Barak Rugs (Kilims), are brought to life by the
skilled hands of local women. Through the Barak Women’s Weaving Cooperative,
this tradition continues using natural root dyes and ancient motifs, creating
pieces that are not just souvenirs, but works of art.

Traditional Yoruk Festivals: Each year, local festivals
celebrate this nomadic heritage with traditional costumes, folk dances, and
authentic cuisine. These festivities offer our guests a chance to experience
the warm, hospitable soul of the region in its most genuine form.

The Zero Point of History: The Lycian League
Walking through our region is a journey through time. From
Patara, home to the world’s first democratic parliament, to the UNESCO-listed
Xanthos and the monumental rock tombs of Kaş (Antiphellos), history is woven
into the landscape. Hiking along the famous Lycian Way, you will find that
encountering an ancient theater or a limestone sarcophagus is a daily miracle
here.

Respecting Our Local Values
At Kalkan Suite Hotel, we hold a deep reverence for the
scent of our local olive oil, the intricate knots of a hand-woven rug, and the
journey of a sea turtle. We believe our guests share this respect for our
fragile ecosystem and rich cultural fabric.
We invite you to listen to the silent song of history and
nature at the heart of Kaş, Kalkan, and Patara.
